How To Start In The Pits In iRacing

Embarking on your iRacing career is an exciting endeavor, offering the opportunity to compete in thrilling races against a global community of passionate sim racers. 

One crucial aspect of mastering iRacing is understanding how to start effectively from the pits, ensuring that you maximize your performance and minimize potential pitfalls during race starts.

Step 1: Understand Pit Start Procedures

Before diving into pit starts, it’s essential to understand the pit start procedures in iRacing. Familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations governing pit starts, including the requirement to come to a complete stop in your pit stall before exiting the pits. 

Pay attention to any specific instructions or guidelines provided in the race briefing or session notes regarding pit starts.

Step 2: Position Your Car Correctly

When starting from the pits in iRacing, positioning your car correctly in your pit stall is crucial for a successful pit start. 

Approach your pit stall carefully, ensuring that your car is aligned correctly within the boundaries of the pit box. 

Use visual markers or reference points on the track to guide your positioning and ensure that you come to a complete stop in the designated area.

Step 3: Engage Pit Limiter

Once your car is properly positioned in your pit stall, engage the pit limiter to control your speed and prevent exceeding the pit lane speed limit. 

Activate the pit limiter using the designated button or keybind on your controller or steering wheel. Verify that the pit limiter is engaged by monitoring your speedometer or the on-screen display to ensure that you’re maintaining the prescribed speed limit.

Step 4: Monitor Pit Lane Traffic

While waiting in the pits, monitor pit lane traffic and be aware of other cars entering and exiting the pits around you. 

Maintain situational awareness and anticipate the movements of other drivers to avoid collisions or incidents in the congested pit lane environment. 

Exercise caution when navigating through pit lane traffic and yield to faster-moving cars when necessary.

Step 5: Anticipate Green Flag

As the race start approaches, anticipate the green flag and be prepared to exit the pits promptly when the race begins. 

Keep an eye on the race control messages or listen to audio cues from your spotter to signal the start of the race. 

Prepare to disengage the pit limiter and accelerate out of the pits as soon as the green flag is waved, ensuring a smooth and efficient pit start.

Step 6: Disengage Pit Limiter

Upon receiving the signal to start the race, disengage the pit limiter and accelerate out of your pit stall to rejoin the race. 

Release the pit limiter using the designated button or keybind on your controller or steering wheel, allowing your car to accelerate to racing speed. 

Maintain control of your car as you exit the pits and merge onto the track, avoiding collisions with other cars and maintaining a safe and consistent pace.

Step 7: Merge Safely onto Track

As you exit the pits and merge onto the track, be mindful of other cars and traffic approaching at high speed. 

Use your mirrors and spotter to check for approaching cars and adjust your speed and trajectory to merge safely into the racing line. 

Yield to oncoming traffic when necessary and merge smoothly into the flow of cars on the track, ensuring minimal disruption to other drivers.

Step 8: Resume Racing

Once you’ve safely merged onto the track and established your position, focus on resuming racing and finding your rhythm on the circuit. 

Concentrate on hitting your marks, maintaining consistent lap times, and navigating the challenges of the race ahead. 

Stay alert, remain focused, and be prepared to adapt to changing race conditions and circumstances as you compete against your fellow drivers.
