Tokyo Xtreme Racer is the new Shutoko Battle game from Genki, the Japanese studio that made the earlier games in the series. You race rivals one on one on a recreated Shuto Expressway at night, and the win goes to whoever drains the other driver's Spirit Points to zero. It is on PC (Steam) and PS5. It is not on Xbox.
I have not driven it, so I am not going to tell you how it feels. This page is what Genki and the stores publish, plus what players say in the reviews.
Checked on 15 October 2026 against the US Steam store page and DLC pages for Tokyo Xtreme Racer (prices in US dollars, US region), Genki's announcements on Steam from January 2025 to 1 October 2026, the US PlayStation Store page and the Xbox store search. Where something is not published, I say so instead of filling the gap.

What Tokyo Xtreme Racer is
Genki develops and publishes it. The store text sets it in a "sealed future Tokyo": the highways are closed off, it is always night, and the only thing that matters is who is fastest.
It is a single player game. No online racing, no lobbies. Steam lists it as Racing and RPG, and the RPG part is real. You earn CP (the money) and BP (points for the perk tree), you level your driver, you tune and dress your car, and you work through a story of more than 450 rivals.
Genki also cut one thing it had promised. Steam leaderboards ("Steam Record Ranking") were dropped before the full release because, in Genki's words, the cheat prevention was not good enough to keep it fair.
Release dates
| Milestone | Date |
|---|---|
| Steam early access | 22 January 2025 |
| Early access extended | Announced 15 May 2025, to the end of September 2025 |
| Full release (1.0) on Steam | 24 September 2025 (25 September in Japan) |
| PS5 release | 25 February 2026 on the US PlayStation Store (26 February in Japan) |
Early access was planned to be shorter. In May 2025 Genki pushed the full release back, giving three reasons: player feedback, more time to tune the game, and licensing talks with car makers that were not finished yet. Everyone who bought early access got the full game at no extra cost.
PS5 and Xbox
PS5: out. The PS5 version is on the PlayStation Store, published by Genki, dated 25 February 2026. The listing says PS5 Pro Enhanced, and DualSense vibration and trigger effects. It is the same $49.99 list price as on Steam.
Xbox: not announced. I searched the Xbox store catalogue and it returns nothing for Tokyo Xtreme Racer. Genki has not announced an Xbox Series X|S version or a date. Press reports say Genki is still looking at other platforms but cannot commit to any of them yet. Until Genki posts an announcement, assume there is no Xbox version coming soon.
There is no Switch 2 version announced either.
The Shutoko battle system
This is what makes the series different from every other street racer, so it is worth understanding before you buy.
SP battles. Both drivers have an SP bar, Spirit Points, which Genki calls a measure of mental strength. While you battle, you drain the other driver's SP. Lose all of yours and you lose. Collisions cost SP too. Since version 1.0, collision damage is lower early in a run and higher at speed later in the run.
Driver stats. Version 0.14.0 split your driver into five stats: SP, ATK (how hard you drain the rival), DEF (how much you resist), TGH (how well you resist collision damage) and TEC (skill slots). Skills and nitro sit on top of that.
Rivals. More than 450 of them. They are spread across the routes, they sit in teams with a leader, and some only show up when you meet certain conditions. Genki's notes call these special rivals Wanderers. The parking areas (PAs) are the hubs between battles: you talk to rivals there, call a tuner, change tyres and refill nitro.
Difficulty options. You choose at the start whether the perk tree is restricted (CHALLENGE) or open (ENJOY). There is an optional rule for water and oil temperature and constant tyre wear, which pays 1.5 times the rewards. After the story, New Game+ adds MASTER-TUNE, where your car's speed metric is capped to match each rival, with an extra rule that bans skills and nitro for 1.5 times the BP.

Cars and manufacturers
The store says the game features "over 30 officially licensed manufacturers", with real cars and real aero parts. That number covers parts makers as well as car brands.
Genki does not publish a full car list or a car count, on Steam or on the PlayStation Store. Fan lists exist, but they disagree with each other, so I will not quote a number I cannot check.
What I can confirm from Genki's own patch notes and screenshots:
- Toyota. The GR Supra RZ (DB06) '22 and the Sprinter Trueno are in the official screenshots. Version 1.3.0 added the Townace Van GL (KR52V) '05 and Dyna (XZU402) '99 as drivable cars.
- Honda. Added with the full release. Version 1.3.0 added the Fit 1.5W (GD3) '04 and Accord Euro-R (CL7) '02.
- Mazda. The CX-3 X (DK5AW) '15 came in 1.3.0. A Guest Rival drives an RX-8 Type S.
- Lexus. Added with the full release.
- Daihatsu. The Copen (LA400K) appears in an early access fix.
- Datsun. The Sunny Truck 1200 Long Body Deluxe (GB121) '79 was announced with the MINI GT collaboration in September 2026.
Engine swaps arrived in 1.0, so a weak stock car can be made competitive by changing the power unit.

The Guest Rival packs are free on both Steam and PS5, but they are time limited. Claim them while they are up. Genki says anything you add during the window stays yours after it ends. I could not confirm what Vol. 2 cost because it is gone from the store.
The current sale is a special promotion. On Steam it ends on 20 October, on the PlayStation Store on 22 October. If you are reading this later, the $49.99 list price is the number to plan with.

PC requirements
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10/11 64-bit | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| CPU | Intel Core i7-7700, Core i5-8400, Ryzen 5 1600X or Ryzen 7 1700 | Intel Core i7-13700, Ryzen 9 7900X or Ryzen 7 7700X |
| RAM | 16 GB | 16 GB |
| GPU | GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) or Radeon RX 580 | RTX 3060 (8 GB) or Radeon RX 6700 |
| DirectX | 12 | 12 |
| Storage | 12 GB, SSD recommended | 12 GB, SSD recommended |
| Target | 1080p, Low settings | High settings |
It is Windows only on Steam, no Mac or Linux build. If DirectX 12 will not start on your PC, Genki added a DirectX 11 launch option in September 2025. Version 1.0 also added an option to drop the minimum frame rate from 60 to 30 FPS for weaker machines.
Wheel support
Steam marks the game "Gamepad Recommended". It does support wheels, and Genki lists these as having presets:
- Fanatec CSL DD
- HORI Wireless Racing Wheel Apex, Force Feedback Truck Control System and Force Feedback Racing Wheel DLX
- Logitech G29, G923 TRUEFORCE and RS50
- MOZA R5
- Thrustmaster T248, T300 RS and T598
Other wheels can be mapped by hand in the options. Force feedback was reworked in 0.12.0 (May 2025), a crash on start with the MOZA R5 was fixed in 1.0.1, and 1.4.0 (March 2026) added Logitech TRUEFORCE audio effects.
On PS5 the store page lists DualSense features but says nothing about wheels, so I cannot tell you which wheels work there.
If you want the same roads on a proper sim with a wheel, the Shutoko Revival Project for Assetto Corsa is free and the Assetto Corsa highway maps page shows how to add traffic.

Dates are the day Genki posted the notes on Steam. Replays were promised for 1.0 and arrived five months later, in 1.3.0.
Is Tokyo Xtreme Racer worth it?
For a fan of the old Shutoko games, the numbers say yes. 95% of 10,431 English reviews on Steam are positive, rated Overwhelmingly Positive. Across all languages it is 14,837 positive out of 15,881, about 93%. It was a finalist for Best Soundtrack in the Steam Awards 2025. On the PlayStation Store it averages 4.59 out of 5 from around 3,000 ratings.
The last 30 days are lower: 83% of 124 reviews. Still positive, but read the recent ones before you buy.
What you should know going in:
- It is not a sim. SP battles, skills, nitro and auras are arcade and RPG systems. If you want to learn real car control, this is the wrong game.
- It is single player only. No online racing, and the leaderboards were cut.
- Genki keeps working on it. Twelve updates from 1.0.0 to 1.6.0 in one year, with free cars and free DLC so far.
- At $29.99 it is an easy call if night highway battles are your thing. At $49.99 I would wait for the next sale, because Genki discounts it often: five times since April 2026, counting the current one.
If you came here for Japanese roads in an open world instead, Forza Horizon 6 is set in Japan and has online play.
