Le Mans Ultimate rates you twice. Safety Rank (SR) measures how clean you drive and decides which online races you can enter. Driver Rank (DR) measures your results against the strength of the field and decides who you get matched with. Both run on RaceControl, Studio 397's online platform, and both go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum.

The official wording is "Safety Rank" and "Driver Rank". Most players say Safety Rating and Driver Rating, and the game's own patch notes mix both. It is the same thing.

Checked on 15 October 2026 against RaceControl's guide "Le Mans Ultimate: Understanding The Online Competition System" (6 October 2025), RaceControl's "New Features for Pro & Pro+ Subscribers" (27 July 2026), and the official Le Mans Ultimate patch notes and announcements on Steam from V1.1 (23 September 2025) to V1.4.3 (6 October 2026). I have not raced Le Mans Ultimate online, so everything below is what Studio 397 and Motorsport Games publish. Where they publish nothing, I say so.

RaceControl says the four tiers mirror how drivers are graded in the real World Endurance Championship. Each tier has three sub-levels. When you reach 100% of sub-level three, you move up to the next tier. Bronze 3 becomes Silver 1, and so on.

How Safety Rank works

RaceControl calls SR "the most important aspect" of the rating system, because it is the one that opens races. It is tracked from your first online race.

These are the things RaceControl lists as affecting SR:

  • Contact with other cars
  • Contact with walls and barriers
  • How severe the contact is
  • Track limits and corner cutting
  • Speeding in the pit lane
  • DNFs and disqualifications
  • Losing control of the car

Read that list as a driver and it is simple. Every off, every touch, every spin costs you. RaceControl does not publish the formula or the points per incident, so nobody outside Studio 397 can tell you that a tap costs X.

What raises SR

RaceControl does not publish a "clean lap" bonus the way iRacing does. What it describes is a result per race: after each race you see arrows. One arrow is a small gain or loss, two is medium, and three is the maximum gain or loss for one race. Some races change nothing.

So the way up is races without the items on that list. Finish, stay on the track, keep the pit lane speed, and do not touch anybody.

Track limits got stricter in October 2026

The V1.4.3 patch on 6 October 2026 updated track limits so specific point penalties can be added for off tracks, with configurable four wheel or one wheel off detection. The same notes say pit lane blend lines now use one wheel off detection, and the track limits at Le Mans got stricter.

Since track limits are on the SR list, I would treat every white line as a wall after this patch. The notes do not say how many SR points a track limits warning costs.

How Driver Rank works

DR is about who is in your race and where you finish against them. In RaceControl's words, it is "based entirely on the strength of the field you are facing each race".

  • Beat drivers ranked higher than you and you gain more.
  • Lose to drivers ranked lower than you and you lose more.
  • The overall strength of the lobby changes how big the swing is.

After the race, the summary shows your expected qualifying and finishing positions, and if you finished in the top half of the grid. The V1.1 patch notes (23 September 2025) added post race reasons showing how many drivers you beat or lost to relative to your Elo. That is the closest thing to a formula Studio 397 has published.

The same V1.1 update rebalanced the DR tiers. Studio 397 said the Silver bracket had been smaller than the others, so it expected drivers ranked Silver 2 and above to move down when the update went live. If your DR dropped in late September 2025 for no reason, that was it.

One detail from RaceControl's 2025 guide: a DR earned in rFactor 2 Online carries over to Le Mans Ultimate, so you may not start at Bronze DR. Safety Rank does not carry over. It is tracked per title.

If you come from iRacing, DR is the iRating equivalent and SR is the license. I compare the two systems in Le Mans Ultimate vs iRacing.

What each rating opens

Safety Rank is the gate. Driver Rank is not.

The championship rows come from my Le Mans Ultimate schedule, where I keep the full Season 13 dates, start times and track rotation. RaceControl does not publish a fixed SR for weekly and special events in one place. Each event card shows its own requirement, so check it in the game before you plan around a big race.

Weekly and special events also move your ratings more. RaceControl says they have "much more of an impact" because they are longer, rarer and more prestigious. A bad 24 hour race can undo weeks of clean dailies.

How to check your SR and DR

RaceControl's guide gives three places:

  1. Your driver profile. It shows your current SR and DR.
  2. The race summary. After every race you get the arrows and a rank breakdown, with expected and actual positions.
  3. Event history. Each past event shows how both ranks changed, so you can see the trend over time.

Daily race cards also show the SR needed to enter. The V1.3 patch notes (31 March 2026) mention the safety rank box on the upcoming daily races screen, so you see the gate before you register.

Driver Badges are a separate thing

Since V1.2 (December 2025), every player also has a Driver Badge. Studio 397 describes it as your contact ratio over your last 10 races, adjusted for severity. You are a Rookie for your first 10 races, then Good Driver, Trusted Driver or Warning.

Studio 397 is clear that this is a different metric from Safety Rank, even though it uses some of the same inputs. Badges can be used to build splits: the V1.2 notes added an option to prioritise badge categories over Driver Rank, and Studio 397 said it would test badge first matchmaking in Beginner lobbies.

So you can have a decent SR and still carry a Warning badge after a few messy races. Both point the same way: stop hitting people.

Penalties, quitting and disconnects

What the official notes say, in order:

  • Quitting mid-race. In the V1.4 announcement on 21 July 2026, Studio 397 said players who quit mid-race to dodge damage or penalties "no longer escape the consequences". Alt+F4 is not a way to save your SR.
  • Disconnects. V1.4 (28 July 2026) restores your car's damage state when you rejoin a race after a disconnection. V1.4.3 (6 October 2026) fixed damage not being restored after a disconnect in driver swap events. Studio 397 does not say in the patch notes how a disconnect counts for SR or DR. A RaceControl support page on connection issues reportedly says drops are treated like a mechanical failure with no rating change, but I could not open that page on 15 October 2026, so treat it as unconfirmed.
  • Team events. V1.4 added minimum drive time rules. A lineup that does not meet them does not gain DR or championship points, but can still lose DR.
  • Excessive track limits. V1.2 added a disqualification at 15 or more track limits points. A DSQ is on the SR list.
  • Protests. Since V1.4 you file a protest from inside the replay. Each player gets 3 per month, with a credit back for each successful one, and the V1.4 announcement says you must file within 24 hours of the event. Outside championships, only intentional wrecks are protestable. Racing incidents belong in the online championships.

How to recover a low SR

There is no reset button in the official material. You earn it back. Here is how I would do it:

  • Use an Event Joker on the disaster race. Since V1.4 (28 July 2026), all players can earn Event Jokers. One played from the Event Results screen removes the DR and SR impact of that race. The race still counts as a championship attempt. It takes 10 races to earn your first, 20 for your second and 30 for your third, you can hold 3 at most, and they work only on single driver events, not team races. V1.4.0.1 also blocked jokers on events before 10am on 28 July 2026.
  • Drop back to Beginner dailies. They are short, open to all, and the field is on the same fixed setup. That is the lowest risk race on the calendar.
  • Race the car you qualified, not the one ahead. A clean P12 is worth more to your SR than a crashed P5.
  • Give room on lap 1 and at the first corner. Nobody wins an endurance race at turn 1, and that is where the field is packed tightest.
  • Avoid special events until you are back up. They move your rating the most, in both directions.
  • Fix your wheel feel first. If you keep losing the car on corner exit, that is on the SR list too. My Le Mans Ultimate FFB settings are where I would start.

If you also race ACC, the logic is close to its own system. I break down how ACC scores you in the ACC driver rating system.

What Studio 397 has not published

So you know where the gaps are:

  • The exact SR formula or points per incident.
  • The exact DR numbers behind each tier after the V1.1 rebalance.
  • A single list of SR requirements for weekly and special events.
  • Whether ratings ever decay with inactivity.
  • A full written rule on disconnects in the patch notes.

I will update this page when RaceControl publishes any of it.

FAQ

What is Safety Rating in Le Mans Ultimate?

It is RaceControl's measure of how clean you drive, officially called Safety Rank. Contact, track limits, pit lane speeding, spins and DNFs lower it. It decides which races you can enter.

What is Driver Rating in Le Mans Ultimate?

Driver Rank (DR) measures your results against the strength of the field. Beating higher ranked drivers raises it more. It sets matchmaking and splits.

What SR do I need for Intermediate and Advanced races?

Silver SR for Intermediate and Gold SR for Advanced. Beginner daily races are open to everyone.

What are the SR and DR tiers in Le Mans Ultimate?

Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, each with three sub-levels. Fill sub-level three to 100% and you move up a tier.

How do I raise my Safety Rating quickly in LMU?

Race clean, short Beginner dailies, stay inside track limits and respect the pit lane limit. There is no published shortcut.

Does quitting a race save my SR in Le Mans Ultimate?

No. Since V1.4, Studio 397 says players who quit mid-race to avoid damage or penalties no longer escape the consequences.

What is the Event Joker in Le Mans Ultimate?

A card you earn by racing that removes the SR and DR impact of one single driver race. It came to all players with V1.4 on 28 July 2026. You can hold up to 3.

Does my rFactor 2 rating carry over to Le Mans Ultimate?

According to RaceControl's 2025 guide, Driver Rank does and Safety Rank does not.
