Being a sim racing driver, you know that having the best possible setup is crucial to getting those fast laps in.

But what’s better for your setup: a triple monitor set up or a single ultrawide monitor?

Spoiler alert: whether a triple monitor setup is better than using a single ultrawide one really depends on your own preferences, though most sim racers tend to prefer the triple monitor option as they feel it performs better.

Triple Monitor

Having said that, let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each to see which is best for you.

We’re gonna go through some of the aspects we will need to discuss in order to declare a winner including:

  • Price tag
  • Graphics quality
  • Performance
  • FOV and Realism
  • Ease of use
  • Space required
  • Software & Hardware
  • Instagram brag-worthiness
  • Device Compatibility

Okay so let’s get started with the first one.

Price Tag

In terms of price, one could assume that a triple monitor setup would be more expensive than a single ultrawide monitor.

However, this is not always the case.

Price Tag

In fact sometimes, you can find a great triple screen monitor setup that’s more affordable than single ultrawide ones from certain brands.

In fact in the case of the Samsung Odyssey G9 ultrawide monitor, the price starts from $1,599 which is more than 3 affordable single screen monitors combined.

Which is the most affordable option?

It really just depends on the brand and model that you choose as well as any additional features that you might want, though it generally tends to be the ultrawide monitors being more affordable.

Graphics Quality

When it comes to graphics quality, triple monitor setups tend to win out.

This is because with a triple monitor set up, you have way more pixels which means that things will look a lot sharper and more defined.

Graphics Quality

On the other hand, an ultrawide monitor could still look good, but it will not be as accurate as on a triple monitor set up in most cases.

When it comes to performance, again triple monitor setups have an advantage.

The main reason for this is that you have less screen tearing and input lag with a triple monitor setup.

This is due to the fact that each monitor is its own display so there’s no need to process the image three times like you would have to with an ultrawide monitor.

FOV and Realism

When it comes to FOV (field of view) and realism, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

On one hand, an ultrawide monitor will give you a wider FOV as it takes up more of your peripheral vision.

However, on the other hand, some sim racers feel that a triple monitor setup provides a more realistic feeling as it gives you a sense of depth and realistic perception.

It really just comes down to what you prefer.

Ease of Use

In terms of ease of use, it’s generally agreed that ultrawide monitors are easier to set up and use.

This is because all you need is one display and one cable as opposed to three monitors and three cables for a triple monitor setup.

Despite that, triple monitors are not that difficult to set up either and once you have it all set up, it’s really just becomes a matter of preference.

Space Required

When it comes to the amount of space required, a triple monitor setup will obviously take up more space than an ultrawide monitor.

This is mainly because with an ultrawide monitor, you could eventually just put it on your desk and you’re done.

However, with a triple monitor setup, you will need to have enough room on your desk or in your sim racing rig to fit all three monitors.

Software & Hardware

In terms of software and hardware, triple monitor setups are a bit more demanding.

This is because you’ll likely need a more powerful graphics card to run three monitors as opposed to just one.

You will also need to make sure that your PC can actually handle the extra load of running three monitors.

Instagram Brag-worthiness

Let’s be honest, we all want to show off our triple monitor or ultrawide setups on Instagram and make all our friends jealous.

Which one is more likely to get the most likes?

Well, it really just depends on your audience.

Instagram Brag-worthiness

If you have a tech-savvy audience that loves high end gaming gear, then a triple monitor setup is probably more likely to get more likes.

On the other hand, if you have a more general audience that just likes nice things, then maybe an ultrawide monitor is going to get more likes.

Device Compatibility

Last but not least, we need to consider our device compatibility.

Ultrawide monitors are becoming more and more popular, but they may not be compatible with all console devices just yet.

This means that if you want to use your ultrawide monitor for gaming on PS4 or Xbox One, you may need to get an adapter or buy a specific model that is compatible.

On the other hand, triple monitors have been around for a while now and are almost all universally compatible with any device.

Are triple screen monitors more realistic than single ultrawide?

Some users feel that an ultrawide monitor gives a wider field of view which enhances the realism, while others think that triple monitors provide a better sense of depth and realism.

As always it really comes down to what the user prefers, though a triple screen monitor is certainly more realistic and immersive to drive.

Do you need 3 monitors for sim racing?

Not necessarily, but it may provide a more immersive experience as it will enhance your sense of depth and realism which is similar to what you may get in a real car.

Do you need 3 monitors for sim racing?

However, ultrawide monitors are becoming more and more popular and many users find that a single monitor is all they need for an immersive experience.

So there you have it, an in-depth comparison between ultrawide and triple monitor setups.

It really just comes down to what you prefer in terms of immersion, realism, and ease of use.

If you have the space and budget for it, a triple monitor setup is definitely the way to go.

However, if you’re looking for something more affordable and space-efficient, then an ultrawide monitor may be a better option.
