Free roam is the reason the 2014 Assetto Corsa is still installed on my PC. Not the circuits, the roads. A map with 40 km of mountain road, no lap timer and a slow car is the best way I know to switch off after a race weekend.
This page is the maps I would actually install, with who made them, where the real download is, what they cost and how much road you get. I checked every author page, price and length on 9 October 2026. Where the only source was a listing site or a Patreon post I could not open, I say so, because mod facts drift and I would rather you know what is verified.
The motorway maps are on a separate page, best Assetto Corsa highway maps. This one is about open roads, islands, mountains and touge.
What you need first
Two free tools, then the maps:
- Content Manager. You install a map by dragging the archive onto it. My how to install Content Manager page covers it.
- Custom Shaders Patch (CSP). The patch most of these maps need for night, rain, grass and the traffic features. You install it from inside Content Manager.
If this is your first mod, read how to download mods in Assetto Corsa before anything below. And know that these maps are big. A download of 1 to 2 GB and a first load of a minute or two is normal.
One more thing. A free roam layout usually has no AI line, so the map is empty unless you add traffic. Where a traffic add-on exists I link it under the map.
1. Shutoko Revival Project
The Tokyo expressway. Free, from the project's own site, shutokorevivalproject.com, which on 9 October 2026 offers the stable 0.9.3 build and a 0.9.4 public test build, plus a car pack. The team runs a Patreon for server costs, not for the map.
It is on this list and on the highway list because it is both. The elevated loops are a highway, but the parking areas, the junctions and the sheer size make it the best cruising map in the game. The length is not stated by the team; third party listings put it between 165 and 190 km depending on the build.
Traffic: the official servers run traffic variants, so online you get it for nothing. Offline you need a traffic add-on such as New Traffic for Shutoko Revival Project on Overtake.

More on the map and the servers in my Shutoko Revival Project guide.
2. LA Canyons
Phoenix77's map of the real roads in the San Gabriel mountains above Los Angeles: Angeles Crest Highway, Upper Big Tujunga, Angeles Forest Highway and Barley Flats. The free main version is a 42 km loop and it is on Overtake, version 1.2, last updated in February 2020 and still the most downloaded road map on the site.
The extras are paid, from the author's store: a traffic pack from 3 pounds, a road pack with about 50 km more from 6 pounds, the full set from 9 pounds. You do not need any of it to start.

Traffic: the normal and reverse layouts have AI lines, so one way trackday traffic works out of the box with CSP. Two way traffic is only in the paid pack.
This is the map I would install first if you want to drive rather than cruise. Third and fourth gear corners, real camber, drops with no barrier. It rewards looking far ahead the way a real mountain road does.
3. Union Island
A Caribbean island, built by Ben O'Bro, free with a donation link, on Overtake. Version 0.95, last updated in May 2024.
Three layouts matter: Freeroam with more than 30 km of road and 45 pit spots but no AI line, Scenic at 17.5 km with AI, and West at 12.2 km with AI. The author says the road layout is not accurate to the real island, so treat it as inspired by Union Island in St Vincent and the Grenadines, not a copy. CSP is recommended but not mandatory, in the author's words.

Traffic: not on the Freeroam layout. There is a community AI update for Union Island that adds it.
The best map on the page for a slow car. A Mazda MX-5 and an hour here is the whole point of free roam.
4. High Force
Country roads in Teesdale and Weardale, County Durham, in the north of England, named after the waterfall. The author is Brun, not Phoenix77 as a lot of lists say. Free, on Overtake, version 1.0 from 2020, last touched in September 2021.
The layouts start from different villages: the High Force Hotel, Middleton in Teesdale, Stanhope, St John's Chapel and Langdon Beck. The author does not give a length; the listing sites say about 50 km. It ships with its own CSP config for rain and night.

Traffic: none, the author says no AI and no cameras. Narrow, bumpy, stone walls at the edge. The opposite of a highway, and the map that most feels like driving a real British road.
5. Glen Sheil
The author spells it Glen Sheil; the real glen in the Scottish Highlands is Glen Shiel. Credit goes to Grant Hendry, and the original download is through the Facebook page Assetto Drive Unlimited, with a 1.2 GB mirror on listing sites. Free.
The length claim of more than 600 km comes from the author of the traffic add-on, not from the map's author, so I give it as a claim. What I can say is that it is a Scotland inspired map, not a survey of the real A87, and it is big enough that you will not learn it in a week. It uses Sol and the CSP grass, rain and lighting effects, so install CSP first.

Traffic: Savagecars' Glen Sheil Realistic Traffic Simulation, version 1.4, adds it on every road except the dirt mountain tracks.
6. Pacific Coast
Phoenix77 again, and free. 23 km of Highway 1 through Big Sur in California, from Cape San Martin to Ragged Point, on Overtake since 2016 and last updated in October 2021. An optional extras pack is sold from 1 pound on the author's store.

Traffic: built in. The author's traffic guide covers both the CSP trackday mode and the stock race mode, with 20 or more AI cars recommended. The easiest map on the page to get traffic running, which is why I would start here if traffic is what you are after.
Do not confuse it with a map called California Coast. That is a separate, older port from another game, about 14 km, with no AI line and no known author. Pacific Coast is the one you want.
7. Nordschleife Tourist, plus the Freeroam mod
The one map here that needs no mod site. The Nordschleife is in the Dream Pack 1 DLC from Kunos, 6.99 euro on Steam on 9 October 2026, with the Tourist layout at 19.1 km, the full lap and the endurance layout. It has AI, it works on console, it needs nothing else.
What makes it a free roam map is Der_Adenauer's Nordschleife Tourist Freeroam Mod, free, version 1.1, first released in January 2025. It adds about 9 km of the public roads around the track, reachable from the Bridge to Gantry layouts, with a traffic spline for trackday mode. It needs the Dream Pack track and it is not compatible with the 3D trees add-on, so pick one.
8. Targa Florio 73
The Circuito Piccolo delle Madonie in Sicily, the 72 km road circuit of the real Targa Florio, with more than 800 corners and three towns. The author is Abulzz, the mod is still an alpha, version 0.1.0, on Overtake since 2018 and last updated in July 2021. Free, and the author says the finished version will stay free.

Traffic: no AI line in the alpha. A community two way traffic add-on exists. There is also a separate Targa Florio 1967 by Targa TEAM on Overtake if you want the earlier layout.
A point to point road through villages in a 1970s car is a different kind of free roam. It is the one map on this page I would drive with a wheel at 900 degrees and the traction control off.
9. Emerald Bay
The roads around Emerald Bay at Lake Tahoe, California, by y0chang, built from satellite data. Free, beta 1.0, on Overtake since 2020 and last updated in May 2021. The author gives no length; listings say 12 to 14 km.
Small, but one of the prettier short maps, and a good one to test whether your PC and your CSP install are happy before you download a 2 GB island. Traffic and CSP needs are not stated by the author.
10. Gunsai and Akina
Two Japanese touge maps that belong on any free roam list even though neither is big.
Gunsai is the Gunma Cycle Sports Center, the test road from the Japanese car videos. The Project Kaido version is about 6 km, with 32 pit spots, an AI line and cameras, and the CSP grass and rain effects. A second, scratch built version by antudusun exists with three layouts. Both are free, and neither has an author page I could verify, so take the numbers from the listing sites.
Akina is Mount Haruna in Gunma under its Initial D name. The common mod is a conversion from rFactor, about 7.5 km, free, with a two way traffic variant. The original author is not credited on the listing pages.
Short roads, but they are the ones people learn by heart. Downhill, with traffic on, in a light rear wheel drive car, Akina teaches more about trail braking than most circuits.
11. Bella Vista Route
The first paid map on the list and the biggest fictional one. By LBMartin, sold on the Assetto Corsa Tracks store from 7.99 euro, version 1.98F on 9 October 2026. The author claims more than 250 km of road of every kind, with eleven start points and a track day mode from the industrial park.
CSP is mandatory, and rain needs CSP 1.75 preview or newer. Traffic is built in: two way on the main roads and the highway, plus the CSP traffic tool.
Worth the money if you have done the free maps above and want one big world with traffic that works without any extra download. Not worth it before that.
12. Sydney West
The western suburbs of Sydney, with the shops and the motorway, by RJE. The claim is more than 130 km of road, and version 3 added 5 km of the M4. It is a Patreon download, and I could not open the Patreon page to confirm the tier, so price and length here come from search results, not the author's page.
A separate realistic traffic add-on for it also lives on Patreon. If you are already paying for one creator's maps, this is the city map with the most road. If you are not, start with Shutoko.
13. Miami Freeroam
The newest map on the page: AF Mod released it free on 2 November 2025, with a claim of more than 72 km of road, the I-95, the Dolphin Expressway, the airport and the MacArthur bridge, with animated planes and trains. The only official source is the author's Patreon, which I could not open, so every number in this paragraph is from search results.
I include it because it is the one 2025 map the community kept talking about, and because a free American city map did not exist before it. Check CSP and traffic support on the author's page before you download.
Which map should you pick?
| You want | Map |

| To drive, not cruise | LA Canyons |
| A long session in a slow car | Union Island |
| A real British road | High Force |
| Night driving with real players | Shutoko Revival Project |
| Traffic working in five minutes | Pacific Coast |
| A big world, happy to pay | Bella Vista Route |
| Something you already own | Nordschleife Tourist with the Freeroam mod |
| A road from racing history | Targa Florio 73 |
What is coming
Kunos is building an official free roam world for Assetto Corsa EVO, with the first section around the Nurburgring due in update 0.10 on 9 December 2026. That is a different game and a different page, my Assetto Corsa EVO guide, but it is the first time free roam will be official rather than a mod. The maps on this page are not going anywhere. The 2014 game still has the bigger modding scene by a distance.
FAQ
What is the best free roam map for Assetto Corsa?
Shutoko Revival Project for size and online traffic, LA Canyons if you want a real road to drive. Both are free.
Are Assetto Corsa free roam maps free?
Most are. Of the thirteen here, ten are free. Bella Vista Route costs 7.99 euro, Sydney West is on Patreon, and the Nordschleife needs the Dream Pack 1 DLC.
Do I need CSP for free roam maps?
For most of them, yes, and for traffic always. Install Content Manager, then CSP from inside it, before any map on this page.
How do I add traffic to a free roam map?
With CSP's trackday mode on a map that has an AI line, or with a traffic add-on for the map. Pacific Coast and LA Canyons work out of the box; Union Island, Glen Sheil and Targa Florio need the add-ons linked above.
Can I use free roam maps on PS5 or Xbox?
No. Mods are PC only. On console the closest thing is the Nordschleife Tourist layout from Dream Pack 1.
How big are the downloads?
From a few hundred MB for Emerald Bay to 1.2 GB for Glen Sheil and more for Shutoko. Make space before you start.
Which free roam map has the most road?
By the authors' or the add-on authors' claims: Glen Sheil at more than 600 km, then Bella Vista Route at more than 250 km, then Shutoko at 165 to 190 km. None of those figures is measured by me.
