Nitrous in Gran Turismo 7 is simple once you know where it is. Buy the part, fit it, find the button, hold it on a straight.
The game does not explain any of that, so here it is in order. I checked the details on 5 October 2026 against the official Gran Turismo 7 online manual.

Where to buy nitrous
Open the Tuning Shop from the World Map. The parts are split into five tabs: Sports, Club Sports, Semi-Racing, Racing and Extreme. Nitrous is in Extreme.
The tabs open as your Collector Level goes up. Extreme is reported to open at Collector Level 7, which is early. You get there by adding cars to your garage, and the Café menu books hand you most of them.
The part costs Cr. 100,000. That is a lot at the start of the game, and it only covers the car you are sitting in. If you want it on a second car, you pay again. If credits are tight, my GT7 credits guide has the races that pay best.
How to set it up
Buying the part fits it. To change it, go to your Garage, open Car Settings and scroll to the Nitrous/Overtake section. There are two things there.
Nitrous/Overtake Selection. This is where you fit or remove the system. If an event does not allow nitrous, you take it off here. You keep the part.
Output Adjustment. This is the important one. The tank has a fixed size. A higher output gives you a bigger push and empties the tank faster. A lower output gives you a smaller push for longer.
How I would set it:
- Short race, one or two long straights: high output. You have few places to use it, so make each one count.
- Longer race: lower output, so there is still something in the tank for the last laps.
- Car that struggles for traction: lower output. A big hit of power on a car that already spins its wheels gives you more wheelspin, not more speed.

Which button is nitrous?
The manual does not give a fixed button, because it depends on your control layout. It tells you where to look: open Options, go to Controllers, and choose your controller or your wheel. Nitrous/Overtake is in the list of functions.
While you are there, move it if you do not like the place. You want a button you can hold without changing your grip. On a pad that usually means not the same thumb you steer with. On a wheel, a button under your thumb on the rim. My GT7 controller settings page covers the rest of the layout.
How to use it in a race
Hold the button and the car gets the extra power. Let go and it stops. The gauge on screen shows how much is left.
What matters:
- The tank refills between races, not during one. When it is empty, it is empty. A pit stop does not help.
- Use it where the car is flat out and straight. The manual says the same: nitrous works best on long straights.
- Start it at the exit, not in the corner. Get the car straight, get to full throttle, then press. Extra power with steering lock on is how you spin.
- Longer straight first. If a lap has two straights and you can only cover one, take the longer one. The speed you gain stays with you for more seconds.
- Do not waste it at the top. If the car is already on the limiter in top gear, nitrous gives you nothing. Lengthen the top gear or save the tank for the next exit.
In a real race car you learn very fast that lap time comes from the exit of the corner before the straight. It is the same here. Nitrous on a bad exit only gets back what you lost. Nitrous on a good exit is free time.
Where nitrous is not allowed
Polyphony blocks nitrous in a number of events. The Gran Turismo Wiki lists some of the best paying single player races among them, so do not buy the part thinking it will make credit grinding easy. That includes the kind of race I cover in my WTC 600 guide, where the event rules decide what you can fit.
Online, it follows the rules of the room or the event. Where tuning is prohibited, I would expect nitrous to be out with it, so read the regulations before you count on it.
Always check the regulations on the event screen before you spend Cr. 100,000 for one race.
Cars with an overtake system
The section in Car Settings is called Nitrous/Overtake for a reason. A few cars come with an overtake system from the factory, and the game treats it like nitrous. The Super Formula cars are the well known ones. It uses the same button, and you cannot remove it, which also means those cars are locked out of events where nitrous is banned.
Is it worth the credits?
For most players, no, not early. Cr. 100,000 buys tires, a weight reduction stage and a brake upgrade on a cheap car, and those make you faster in every corner of every lap. Nitrous helps for a few seconds on the straights, and not in every event.
Where it does make sense:
- Top speed runs on Special Stage Route X.
- Custom races and open lobbies with friends where it is allowed.
- A single player event you keep losing by a car length on the last straight, if the rules allow it.
Buy it for fun, or for one specific problem. Not as the first upgrade.
