The best rally car to buy first in Forza Horizon 6 is the 2004 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR. It costs about 30,000 credits, it has all wheel drive and it is competitive in dirt races as soon as you fit rally tyres.

There are faster cars on dirt, and I list them below by budget. I checked the cars, prices and stats on 4 October 2026 against the published car listings. Prices are approximate, and I say where the sources disagree.

All six are all wheel drive. The stats are stock figures from the in-game car listings, as published by TechWiser and AllThings.How. I could not find the same listing for the WRX STI, so I left it blank instead of guessing.

Best cheap rally car: Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII MR

About 30,000 credits. That is the price of a hatchback, and you get 305 hp, all wheel drive and the best off-road rating of the cheap cars at 6.0.

It is the heaviest car on this list at 3,108 lb. On dirt that is not a problem. The weight keeps it calm over bumps and ruts, and the power covers it on the straights. Red Bull's guide calls it the best rally car in the game for its mix of speed, off-road grip and handling.

The 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI costs the same and does the same job. It is the more forgiving of the two and it upgrades cleanly through the classes. If you like Subarus, buy that one. You will not lose races because of the choice.

Best light rally car: Toyota GR Yaris

About 54,000 credits. The 2021 GR Yaris has the least power here at 257 hp, and the best handling rating of the cheap cars at 5.1.

It is a short car, so it rotates quickly. That helps on the tight forest trails and mountain passes, where you change direction every few seconds. Pick it if your dirt races are mostly technical, and the Evo if you want the extra power.

Best classic: Subaru Impreza 22B-STi

About 86,000 credits. It is the lightest of the three cheap cars at 2,800 lb, with 276 hp and an off-road rating of 5.7.

On the numbers it is not better than the Evo, and it costs almost three times as much. You buy it because it is the 22B. It is also a popular base for upgraded dirt builds. TimeSaver lists a built 22B as its A class pick.

Best rally specials: Peugeot 207 Super 2000 and Ford #4 Focus RS

These two are real rally cars, and it shows in one number. Both have an off-road rating of 8.3 before you upgrade anything. The three cheap cars above are between 5.6 and 6.0.

2007 Peugeot 207 Super 2000. 280 hp and only 2,425 lb, with the best handling rating on this list at 5.8. It is the lightest and the most agile car here. The sources disagree on how you get it: TechWiser lists it as a Pink Wristband reward, AllThings. How lists a value of 85,000 credits. Check your garage after the Pink Wristband before you look for it anywhere else.

2001 Ford #4 Focus RS. About 415,000 credits. 300 hp, 2,802 lb and a launch rating of 9.6, which is the best start of any car here. It comes with rally tyres from the factory, so it needs less work than the others.

If you have the Peugeot from the wristband, use it and keep the 415,000 credits. If you do not, the Focus is the one to buy.

Best on dirt overall: Subaru BRZ Forza Edition

The 2022 Subaru BRZ Forza Edition is still my pick for the best car on loose surfaces, as in my best cars in Forza Horizon 6. It is stable on gravel and it loses little on tarmac.

It is an Aftermarket car, sold at the Sotoyama Ski Resort. One listing puts it at about 400,000 credits. The same source warns that it rolls over easily on contact, so keep it away from other cars in the first corner.

It is not a rally car in the classic sense, which is why it is not at the top of this page. If you only want to win dirt races, it does that.

Top classes: the conversions

In the highest classes, the fastest dirt cars are not rally cars at all. They are race cars converted with rally parts.

  • 1970 Porsche #3 917 LH Forza Edition. Red Bull rates the 917 Forza Edition as the best dirt racing car for its top speed and its grip on gravel.
  • 2018 Lotus Scura Motorsports Exige WTAC. AllThings. How lists it next to the Porsche as one of the strongest dirt cars once it is converted.
  • 1986 Audi #2 Sport quattro S1. The Group B car. It is the traditional choice if you want a real rally car in the upper classes.

I would not spend credits here early. These cars only make sense once you race online in the top classes, and they need a full build before they work on gravel.

How to build a rally car

The order matters more than the parts. This is how I would spend the credits.

  1. Rally tyres. The biggest single change on a loose surface. A car on road tyres has no grip on gravel however much power it has.
  2. Rally suspension. It gives you more travel and lets you raise the ride height, so the car does not bottom out on jumps and ruts.
  3. All wheel drive. Every car on this page already has it. If you convert another car, this comes first. Rear wheel drive on gravel loses time out of every corner.
  4. Weight and handling parts. Anti-roll bars, brakes, weight reduction.
  5. Power last. Use what is left of the class limit on the engine. Build up to the top of the class, not over it.

Then the tune. Compared with a road setup, run the springs and dampers softer and the ride height higher, so the tyres stay on the ground over bumps. If the car spins on corner exit, lower the rear differential acceleration lock. If it will not rotate into the corner, soften the front anti-roll bar.

The principle is the same as on a real car on a bumpy track. A stiff car skips over the surface, and a tyre in the air has no grip.

Your inputs matter on dirt too. My Forza Horizon 6 controller settings cover the pad, with traction control and stability control off, and my Forza Horizon 6 wheel settings cover the wheel.

Rally car or cross country truck

Dirt racing and cross country are different events and they want different cars.

  • Dirt racing runs on gravel roads and trails with checkpoints. It rewards a light, agile all wheel drive car. Everything on this page is built for it.
  • Cross country cuts across open ground, with jumps, fields and water. It rewards suspension travel, ground clearance and weight. A rally car gets thrown around there.

For cross country, use a truck. My picks are the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser 250 and the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R, both in my best cars in Forza Horizon 6.

What I would buy

  • Under 50,000 credits: the Lancer Evolution VIII MR. Add rally tyres and rally suspension and enter every dirt race.
  • After the Pink Wristband: check for the Peugeot 207 Super 2000. If it is in your garage, it is the better car on gravel.
  • With 400,000 credits to spend: the BRZ Forza Edition if you want to win, the Focus RS if you want a real rally car.
  • Top classes online: a converted Porsche 917 LH Forza Edition.

If you like sliding the car more than racing it, see my best drift cars in Forza Horizon 6. The rest of the game is in my Forza Horizon 6 guide. And if you want rally in a real simulator, these are the best rally cars in sim racing.
