With the rise of virtual reality (VR), it’s no surprise that there are talks of virtual reality in F1 2021.
But what does this mean for the sport, and how will it change the experience of watching or competing in a race?
We’ll take a look at what VR could add to F1 and how it could improve the viewer experience.
VR has already been used in other motorsports games such as iRacing, rFactor 2 and Assetto Corsa Competizione, so we can learn from those experiences to see what might work well in F1.

F1 2021 fans are asking for VR
Unfortunately, the F1 2021 game hasn’t been built with VR in mind from the ground up.
Codemasters hasn’t announced any plans to support VR anytime soon for the F1 2021 game, which is quite frustrating for VR fans.
Sim drivers looking for an edge over the competition
Sim racing drivers are some of the most hardcore gamers out there.
They demand the best hardware and software to give them the edge over their competition. So it’s no surprise that they’re asking for VR support in the F1 2021 game.
VR would add a whole new level of immersion to the game, and it would give sim racing drivers the ultimate experience of realistic sim racing.
If Codemasters can deliver on VR support for the F1 2022 0r 2023 game, it would be a huge win for sim racing fans around the world.
VR gaming is here to stay
According to the Steam Hardware Survey, 24% of gamers already own a VR setup nowadays. That’s quite a lot if you consider that “experts” still consider VR just a “niche”.
With the release of the Oculus Quest 2 and other standalone VR headsets, that number is only going to grow in the next few years.
It’s not a question of if VR will be big in gaming and esports, it’s a question of when. And most sim racers believe Codemasters needs to jump on the VR bandwagon as soon as possible to stay ahead of the competition.
What the future of virtual reality & F1 2022 – 2023 holds
We don’t know yet what will happen for the next releases of the F1 game but we’re very confident that Codemasters is working on VR support for future F1 games releases.
The studio has always been listening to the community and they know that VR is the future of gaming and esports.
We’re also confident that other big studios are working on VR support for their racing games.
So it’s only a matter of time before VR becomes the standard in sim racing games and we can’t wait for that! 🙂
We can only hope that Codemasters will announce VR support for the F1 2023 game or even sooner. But until then, we’ll have to enjoy the F1 2021 game without VR.
Hope that was helpful, see you on track! 🙂
