This is the sweet spot. A GTX 1070-class card holds a stable 60fps at 1080p on high settings, and you can stretch to 1440p if you pull a few sliders back. Any current budget GPU, think RTX 3050 / RX 6600 and up, comfortably beats this tier. The jump from 8GB to 16GB of RAM matters more than people think: Mexico's open world streams constantly, and 8GB systems stutter when the world loads in around you at 300 km/h.

Ideal specs (4K / Extreme)

What Playground calls the "ideal" spec, built for 4K at 60fps on Extreme settings:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-10700K or AMD Ryzen 7 3800XT
  • GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT (10GB VRAM)
  • RAM: 16GB
  • Storage: 110GB SSD

When these specs were published, an RTX 3080 was exotic. In 2026 it's a used-market bargain, and anything from an RTX 4070 upwards handles 4K Extreme without breaking a sweat. If you're on a high-refresh 1440p monitor, this tier is where FH5 turns into a proper showcase, the game still gets used as a benchmark for new PCs for a reason.

The real install size is not 110GB

Every store page still says 110GB. In practice, budget 130-150GB. The PS5 version weighs in at just under 132GB, the Xbox Series X|S install runs to roughly 150GB, and on PC the base game plus years of updates plus the Hot Wheels (~9.5GB) and Rally Adventure (~15.5GB) expansions lands in the same territory.

Install it on an SSD. Playground officially recommends one, and this is the rare case where I'd call it close to mandatory, on a mechanical drive you'll feel the world streaming lag behind you, and fast travel loads go from seconds to a coffee break. Can you play FH5 on a laptop?

Yes, and better than most open-world games. Any gaming laptop with a GPU roughly matching a GTX 970, a GTX 1650 or newer, clears minimum spec. The thing to watch on laptops is thermals, not raw specs: a thin machine that throttles after ten minutes will give you worse lap-to-lap consistency than an older, well-cooled one. Cap the frame rate at 60, keep the laptop plugged in, and you're fine.

What about Steam Deck?

FH5 is officially rated "Playable" on Steam Deck, not Verified, but in my experience that rating undersells it. With settings lowered it runs well, and later updates specifically improved Steam Deck performance and added virtual keyboard support. For a game this size, just mind your storage: 110GB+ eats most of a 256GB Deck.

Consoles: it's on PS5 now too

The biggest change since this game launched: Forza Horizon 5 stopped being an Xbox exclusive on April 29, 2025, when it arrived on PlayStation 5. Is FH5 still worth installing in 2026?

Fair question, with Forza Horizon 6 out since May 19, 2026. My honest take: yes. FH5 still receives maintenance updates in 2026, it's regularly discounted to pocket money, the car list is enormous after four years of content drops, and its specs are far friendlier than FH6's. If your PC is borderline, FH5 is the better buy, you're getting 95% of the Horizon experience at a fraction of the hardware cost.

Can I run Forza Horizon 5 with 8GB of RAM?

Yes, 8GB is the official minimum and the game will run. But 16GB is one of the cheapest upgrades you can make, and it noticeably smooths out world streaming stutter. If you're buying RAM for one racing game, this is the one that rewards it.

How much storage does FH5 actually need in 2026?

The listed 110GB is optimistic. With updates and both expansions, plan for 130-150GB depending on platform. Base game only, on PC, you'll still want 110-120GB free.
